Many historical stories involving the unusual properties of the Dead Sea were known for years. It is well known that Cleopatra, the famous and beautiful Egyptian Queen, used to secretly send caravans of camels to the Dead Sea to bring her waters for bathing. She claimed that these waters helped maintain her beautiful skin. Rich Romans in later days also received these waters from the Dead Sea. They too found out that the qualities of the water did wonders for their skin. They did not know the reasons for the effects but were interested just because of the results.

In the early part of 1960 studies were undertaken to investigate the unusual properties of the Dead Sea minerals, partly by Hadassah Hospital and partly by private initiative. Based on the results achieved, Lon Cosmetics was established. This was the first cosmetic company, the original pioneering company; to develop cosmetic products based on the findings and developments of the properties discovered by the Lon group.

The minerals of the Dead Sea water and the Mud originating from the springs around and flowing into the sea, were found to be the source of the beneficial properties in treating skin and especially skin ailments.

It was then found that the mud had undergone chemical changes. Due to the climatic conditions of the Dead Sea's geographical area and the effects of the sun's rays in the region, the mud contained many important minerals including organic materials.

The Dead Sea is about 400 meters (around 1300 feet) below sea level, the lowest point on earth, and as such the resulting climatic conditions create a special situation which facilitates beneficial skin treatments. It was discovered that certain skin rashes and ailments can be cured by bathing in these waters and by application of the mud. The mineral concentration of more than 20 essential minerals is over 30% which is so much higher than ocean water mineral concentration of 3%. Very effective sulfur is present in the water and especially in the important mud. Based on these facts, Health Authorities in many European countries started to send people with skin problems, at the government's expense, to the Dead Sea area for treatments. Many excellent hotels were built, offering special medical services for these tourists.
